Questions and Answers

What will happen on Kids Day @ SLAC? After registration and a SLAC welcome from SLAC Director  Dr. Jonathan Dorfan, the kids will be divided up into their workshop groups, based on the workshop option chosen on the registration form. Kids 9-11 years old will attend two hands-on workshops in the morning and two in the afternoon after lunch. Kids 12 years old and up will attend one hands-on workshop in the morning and one in the afternoon. All workshop choices will be based on a first come, first serve, pre-registration and are suitable for 9 through 16 years old. How much does it cost? There is a $10 charge this year that includes lunch, a t-shirt and ice cream at the ice cream social.

What is for lunch? There will be a hot dog and quesadilla lunch, that is included in the registration fee of $10. Sponsors, volunteers and other SLAC staff members who wish to eat with the kids should fill out a registration form and submit it and a check made out to Stanford University to Lisa Mongetta, MS 11.

How do I get a t-shirt? Parents, sponsors and volunteers wish to purchase a t-shirt should fill out a registration form and submit it and a check made out to Stanford University to Lisa Mongetta, MS 11.

When do we get ice cream? After the last workshop, at 2:30 PM, there will be an ice cream social in the breezeway of the auditorium. Shortly thereafter, there will be a fun and interesting science talk by Dr. Graham George (also known as Dr. Boom).

When can I take my kid to my own work area? Sponsors and parents are encouraged to visit their own work areas with the kids either during the lunch hour or after the science talk. 

When can we go to the fire station? The SLAC fire station will be open for tours during the lunch hour. Sponsors are encouraged to walk over to the station with their charges. Please be back to the auditorium by 12:15 PM.

When and how do I register a child? Registration materials will be distributed to each mailroom at SLAC by Monday, June 2, 2003. Sponsors must complete the registration form and submit a $10. check make out to "Stanford University" for each participant by Tuesday, July 1. There will be limited number of participants and we expect to fill all available space, so please register immediately. What are my responsibilities as a sponsor? You must attend with your child(ren) the 8:30 AM check in, the 11:30 lunch and the 2:30 PM ice cream social and science talk on Tuesday, July 15, at Panofsky Auditorium.

Can I bring another adult who is not a SLAC staff member? No, Kids Day @ SLAC is for kids. The program can accommodate 156 children. We do not have the capacity for extra adults.

How do kids get to their workshops? Staff volunteers will escort groups of kids to their respective workshops. It is strictly prohibited for sponsors to take kids directly to the workshops; the workshops are not open houses. If sponsors want to accompany kids to the workshops they must sign up to be a volunteer escort. The kids will be brought back to the breezeway between the cafeteria and the auditorium by 11:30 AM, where they will be met by their sponsors for lunch. We will start to re-organize the workshop groups again at 12:15 PM. Staff volunteers will escort groups of kids to their afternoon workshops; they will leave the breezeway at 12:20 PM. The volunteers will return the kids to the breezeway by 2:30 PM, where sponsors will meet them for our ice cream social. and the science talk.

Who pays for lunch for sponsors and volunteers? Sponsors and volunteers must pay for their own lunch and purchase their lunch tickets in advance.
