Welcome to Kids Day @ SLAC 2008

Frequently Asked Questions

What will happen on Kids Day @ SLAC?
After registration, kids 9 to 11 years old will go to the ROB and kids 12 to 16 years old will go to the Kavli Auditorium. In each location they will get a safety talk and SLAC welcome (kids only, no sponsors, escorts, or parents). The kids will be welcomed by Dr. Eleanor Schofield in in the ROB and Dr. William White in the Kavli Auditorium.

After the talks, the kids will be divided up into their workshop groups, based on the workshop option chosen on the registration form. Kids 9-11 years old will attend two hands-on workshops in the morning and two in the afternoon after lunch. Kids 12 years old and up will attend one hands-on workshop in the morning and one in the afternoon. All workshop choices will be based on a first-come, first-serve pre-registration and are suitable for 9 through 16 years old. Please feel free to contact Barry Webb at x2355 with any general questions.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to the importance of keeping track of where each and every child is the day of Kids Day and for obvious safety reasons, no one will be allowed to change workshops the day of the event. Also no child will be allowed to walk in and register the day of the event. We do our best to accommodate everyone’s first choice of workshops and pairing of children.

How much does it cost?
There is a $20 charge ($22 if an XXL shirt is chosen) this year that includes morning refreshments, lunch, a t-shirt and ice cream at the ice cream social.
How do I get a t-shirt?
Parents, sponsors, volunteers or other SLAC staff members who wish to purchase a t-shirt should fill out a registration form and submit it and a check made out to “Stanford University” to Michelle Montalvo, MS 69. If you want to see T-shirts sizes before placing your order, samples will be available in Daphne Mitchell's office Building 280A (LCLS), room 181, x5377.
When and how do I register a child?
The sponsor must complete the registration form (parent must sign consent) and submit a check in the correct amount made out to "Stanford University" for each participant by Friday, July 25. There will be limited number of participants and we expect to fill all available space, so please register immediately. If you have any questions, contact Michelle Montalvo at x2057 or montalvo@slac.stanford.edu.
What are my responsibilities as a sponsor?
You must review with the child safety instructions (mitigations described on the workshop web page and the registration packet) and attend the 8:00 - 8:50 AM check in and the 11:30 lunch. You are also invited to attend the 2:30 pm ice cream social and afternoon science talks at the Panofsky Auditorium with Dr. Uwe Bergmann for 9 - 11 years old and Dr. Eduardo do Couto e Silva  in the Kavli Auditorium for 12 - 16 years old. Make sure that the kids wear long pants, closed-toed shoes, no jewelry and have hair pulled back! Pick up your kids at 3:30 when Kids Day ends.
Who pays for lunch for sponsors and volunteers?
Sponsors and volunteers must pay for their own lunch and purchase their lunch tickets in advance.
How do kids get to their workshops?
Staff volunteers will escort groups of kids to their respective workshops. It is strictly prohibited for sponsors to take kids directly to the workshops; the workshops are not open houses. Sponsors are encouraged to sign up as volunteer escorts.
What afternoon science talk does my kid(s) attend?
The kids are split up by age into two groups. The young kids, ages 9 to 11 years old, and their sponsors, go to the Panofsky Auditorium. The older kids, ages 12 to 16 years old, go to the Kavli Auditorium.
How can I volunteer to help?
Many volunteers are needed on the day of the event and sponsors are encouraged to participate. Please look at our volunteer web page for more information and feel free to contact Michelle Steger, x3011, to volunteer or to ask any questions.
