-------------------

I gladly accept the nomination and thank the nominators and the
election committee for the opportunity to run for SLAC representative
to the global YPP.

Just about one year ago I started working on BABAR as a postdoc in
SLAC Group C. When I last attended the YPP meeting at the DPF
conference in Riverside, I once more became aware of how important an
organization like this is as a forum for us young physicists to
communicate with each other. The number of people that attended this
meeting is a proof that there is large interest. I have accepted this
nomination because I know how important it is to step forward and take
on some of the work necessary to keep the YPP ideas alive and moving.

We would all like to keep up-to-date on recent developments in high
energy physics and related fields as well as career-oriented issues.
Therefore I think it is a good idea to continue organizing a series of
lectures and seminars that inform us about the various hot topics in
physics, the future of HEP and anything that is useful for the
planning of our careers. Also the outreach program is of particular
importance. We need to make people aware of what our research is
about. With the increasing costs and large time scales of high energy
physics projects in mind, we definitely need to create support from
the public. Going out to schools and trying to get students interested
in the topics we're working on is a step in the right direction.
Already when I was working at DESY and the University of Heidelberg in
Germany, I was very interested in establishing a connection between
schools and university research. For instance, we had so-called
students' days, which gave students from local schools the opportunity
to come to us and learn about modern physics research. I think with
some active participation, there is a lot we can achieve here at SLAC.

In order to keep the YPP chapter at SLAC as strong as it is now, I
would like to encourage more people to get involved in the activities
of the YPP. The representative's responsibility is to keep a strong
link between YPP at SLAC and the other chapters all over the world to
maintain an active exchange between the chapters and a good visibility
of the global YPP activities here at SLAC. In addition, the
representative should keep up the momentum of ongoing projects,
motivate people to come up with new ideas and make them happen. I
would like to thank the members of the YPP core group at SLAC for
their effort and work and gladly offer all the support I can give.

Jochen

Asish Satpathy
Research Associate

Ever since I started my career in experimental particle physics, I am
fascinated by the ideas of "physics outreach", "physics education at
school" and "physics education in general". I think, SLAC YPP is an
institution that can give meaningful shape to that efforts and I am
certainly excited about it. Running as a representative is not my
idea. "Doing something" is what I have in mind.

I am a postdoctoral fellow with the Univ. of Texas at Austin working
on the BaBar experiment. I think we are best positioned young
scientists who can bring a lot of physics outreach program and
generate public interests through this laboratory. Thanks to the past
representatives, YPP@SLAC has been the most active among all the
existing local chapters worldwide. My effort will be to continue this
trend and make it more interesting for everybody to participate.

Some fun tasks that I wish to see them executed in a year are to (1)
involve more teachers and students in the ongoing "three-questions"
project, (2) arrange several public lectures for school teachers and
students, (3) organize theory lecture series for young
experimentalists at SLAC, (4) invigorate the existing journal club and
(5) organize infrequent social get-together among the YPP@SLAC to
generate further discussions. Please join hands with me to celebrate
the "World Year of Physics 2005" (http://www.physics2005.org/) at the
same time.

Irrespective of your choice I am available for an active involvement
in the YPP as long as I am at SLAC.

Thank you.
Asish
