October Seminar
Tuesday, October 28, 2003 - 12 Noon - 1:00pm

"Adventures at 2.00 in the morning."

Speaker: Alex Barnett
Executive Director of the
Chabot Space & Science Center
in the Oakland Hills

Alex Barnett has a lifelong fascination with the stars. She studied astrophysics at the University of Leicester, U.K., before moving into science communication. During her career so far she has hosted her own TV show for the BBC for 2 and a half years, published two popular astronomy and space books (a third is in progress), ran a successful consulting business, and spent six years creating the National Space Centre, a major visitor attraction in the UK.  [I have visited the National Space Center and can attest to it being both educational and entertaining- Cherrill] At the National Space Center Alex was Creative Director, Programs Director and finally Business Development Director. In March she landed in the Bay Area to take over as Executive Director of the Chabot Space and Science Center.

In this talk, Alex will put on many of her different hats and review issues she has faced and does face as a woman scientist, science communicator and businesswoman. These include glass ceilings, being taken seriously (or not), being mistaken for a man, and work-life balance. Whilst all serious issues, Alex is known for her lively presentations...
