Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty Development and Diversity, presents

Londa Schiebinger
Hinds Professor of History of Science, Stanford University

                                       speaking on

"Gendered Innovations
in Science, Engineering, Health & Medicine, and the Environment"

Women and men differ in their needs for and experience with
technology
. Thus it is important to include both women and men in
technology design. Integrating sex and gender
analysis into research as
well as including both women and men users in technology
development
are positive actions that can lead to better designs and
improve
the marketability of products.

The
Gendered Innovations Project provides state-of-the-art methods
of analysis for scientists and engineers that improve their research
and innovation. Several case studies will be discussed as concrete
illustrations of these new methods:

  • Stem cell research

  • Language translation by machines

  • Assistive technologies for the elderly

Ideas for a gender analysis of any SLAC project will be solicited.
