History: Take Our Daughters to Work Day is part of a national event, started by the Ms. Foundation, where girls go with their parents to work instead of going to school for one day. The SLAC event, sponsored by the Women's Interchange at SLAC (WIS), introduces girls to SLAC and helps them expand their career aspirations. The first Take Our Daughters to Work Day at SLAC event was held in 1994, and has gone beyond daughters to include grand-daughters, nieces, cousins and little sisters. SLAC hosted a similar event for boys in 2001 and will host another event on August 1, 2002.

Program: The program that will be presented on April 25, is designed to capture the imagination of girls 9 to 16 years old to help them develop an interest in science, engineering and technology. After registration and a SLAC welcome, accelerator physicist Anahid Yeremian will direct a fun and engaging program that will transport the girls as electrons and positrons through an accelerator vacuum chamber. Then, the girls will attend two hands-on workshops in the morning and two in the afternoon after lunch with their parent or sponsor. Sponsors and parents are encouraged to visit their own work areas with the girls either during the lunch hour or after the workshops. Each girl will choose one set of workshops to attend on her registration form. Older girls, ages 13 years and up, may choose to attend a video workshop during the afternoon workshop sessions. These older girls will join the younger girls during the morning workshop sessions. All workshop choices will be based on a first come, first serve, pre-registration and are suitable for 9 through 16 years old. Please feel free to contact Teresa Troxel , x 3135, with any general questions.

Sponsor Responsibilities: Sponsors must pre-register each participant by Friday, April 19, and attend the final registration and badging process on Thursday, April 25, starting at 7:30 AM, at Panofsky Auditorium. If you have questions regarding registration, please visit our registration page or contact Teresa Troxel, x3135. Staff volunteers will escort groups of girls to their respective workshops. It is strictly prohibited for sponsors to take girls directly to the workshops; the workshops are not open houses. If sponsors want to accompany girls to the workshops they must sign up to be a volunteer escort. The girls will be brought back to the breezeway between the cafeteria and the auditorium by 12:00 noon, where they will be met by their sponsors for lunch. Lunch is not provided by SLAC. Sponsors are asked to bring the girls back to the breezeway no later that 1:10 PM. Staff volunteers will escort groups of girls to their afternoon workshops. They will leave the breezeway at 1:20 PM. The volunteers will return the girls to the breezeway by 3:30 PM, where sponsors must meet them.

Volunteers: Many volunteers are needed on the day of the event and sponsors are encouraged to participate. Please look at our volunteer web page for more information and feel free to contact Michelle Steger, x3011, or Jackie Robleto, x3147, to volunteer or to ask any questions.
