SLAC wants YOU
to VOLUNTEER!!!!!!
We are planning an exciting day at
work for our daughters (grand-daughters, nieces, god-daughters etc).
Our schedule of events will give the girls a chance to learn about SLAC
and the career possibilities that are available in a technical
environment.
Parents, you are responsible for
your own daughters while they are with you at SLAC; but IF we can get some
volunteers to help out for a few hours, you may not have to escort your
daughter all day. Currently we do not have sufficient parent
volunteers for chaperoning the girls to the morning workshops! Let
us know as soon as possible if you can help by contacting Roz Pennacchi at
ext. 3665 or shelter@slac.stanford.edu.
The optional SLAC bus tour times
have changed, it now runs from 1 to 2 p.m. Nor do we need every
parent to go on the tour, registrants will be receiving information on the
logistics of this tour.
Please note parents must escort
their own daughters to the Open Houses from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. and
bring those girls going on the SLAC Bus Tour to the patio outside the
Cafeteria (near the Visitors Center) at 12.50 pm and collect them
at 1.50 pm after the tour.
Special Accelerator Workshop for
girls aged 14 to 16: There will be a special, optional Accelerator Workshop in the SPEAR
Control Room for girls between the ages of 14 and 16 from 1:30 to 3:30
PM. Girls must sign up in advance between 8:00 and 8:45 AM at the
Training Center. Parents will need their ID badge to escort their
daughter to the control room at a pre-assigned time for the 45 minute
long workshop. SPEAR is up and running and delivering beam to SSRL
users. Working one-on-one with a SPEAR operator, each girl will
participate in an electromagnet experiment, measure the ring magnet
currents, measure the RF frequency and count the electron bucket
pattern.
Program
()
(Registrants are expected to attend all morning activities)
Each girl will
join a group attending 2 workshops. Sign-up for each group will take
place on THURSDAY morning, April 26, starting at 8:00 a.m. Sign-up
is on a FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED basis and groups only have a capacity of
10, SO if there is a particular workshop you would like to attend, be sure
to arrive soon after 8:00 am!!! However, all these workshops are
going to be fun!
REMEMBER TO WEAR CLOSED TOE SHOES!!!
Confirmation of your registration (or being
wait-listed) will be sent to your parents e-mail or phone.
Questions
regarding registration should be directed to Michelle Beaty at ext. 5433
or by e-mail: mbeaty@slac.stanford.edu
During the afternoon, parents escort their
daughters to the optional open houses, tours and demonstrations all over
SLAC. An Open House map detailing locations, and room numbers will be
included in the registration packet that each girl will pick-up when she
reports in between 8am and 8.45am on the 26th. Please note that the
machine shop in building 25 closes at 3 PM and that there are two
scheduled identical tours of the Computer Building, one at
1:30 and one at 2:30.
All other Open Houses can be visited at any
time between 1.30 and 3.30pm, a parent must accompany their children to
these optional Open Houses.
Note: All morning
and afternoon activities are for girls ages 9 through 16 only. If you
register your daughter for the morning activities, she is expected to
attend them. A committee is forming to consider organizing a similar days
for boys at a later date; if interested, contact Teresa
Troxel at ext. 3135 to volunteer your help.
