"Profiles in Excellence"

This program will introduce six special employees who represent different career opportunities in science and technology, as well as the best personal qualities for achieving success in tomorrow's diverse workplace.

Neal Adams

Neal Adams began his career as a Summer Student with SLAC Computing Services in the Operations group in August 1975. He worked his way up from a Computer Attendant and became a Computer Operations Supervisor in 1979. For the past 20 years, Neal has developed technical skills which have allowed him to move up to his current position as Technical Coordinator. Neal provides technical hardware support for SLAC's central site and distributed computer environments. Neal is also a member of the Black American SLAC Employee's group (BASE), Nat'l Black Data Processor's group, and a mentor for the Woodside High School & Business Academy program.

Stephanie Carlson

Stephanie Carlson is a Administrative Services Manager II for the Stanford Synchotron Radiation Laboratory (SSRL) General Administration Dept., and has been employed with SLAC since April 19, 1994. Stephanie worked in the Dean's Office at the UCLA School of Medicine for 7 yrs., and completed her Masters in Business Administration while working full time. Stephanie is largely responsible for the day-to-day business aspects of SSRL, and as the liaison between SLAC Business departments and SSRL staff, students, and users to resolve problems and clarify procedures.

Michelle Charpentier

Michelle Charpentier is a Buyer III in the Business Services Dept. Purchasing Office, and has been employed with SLAC since August 8, 1994. Michele has also worked for high-technology companies, such as Lockheed Missiles and Space and McDonnel-Douglas Corp. Michelle's primary duties are to receive requisitions, determine procurement methods and sources, prepare solicitations, evaluate offers, prepare price or cost analyses, and advise and assist departments in the selection of materials and/or service in the preparation of requisitions, to include justification and documentation.

Haitham Hindi

Haitham Hindi is a Research Assistant and a Ph.D. candidate in the Electrical Engineering Dept., designing algorithms which are used to stablilize the electron beams in the accelerators. Haitham first came to SLAC in June, 1991 after receiving his Batchelor of Science degree in Physics, at Imperial College in London, and is currently a student at Stanford University.

John MacMahon

John MacMahon is a Accelerator System Operator I in the Accelerator Operations group, and has been employed with SLAC since September 5, 1996. John was selected as a participant in the 1996 Summer Internships in Science & Engineering (SISE). John's primary duties are to establish, tune and maintain particle beams for physics experiments, ensure all systems are operating in compliance with established procedures for safety of personnel and equipment.

Kathleen Thompson

Kathleen Thompson is a Physicist in the Accelerator Research Department. She began her career at SLAC in 1982, working on software for the control system of the SLAC Linear Collider (SLC). Since 1987 she has worked on a variety of problems related to the theory of linear colliders, as part of an international effort to design and build a very high energy linear collider somewhere in the world.

Claudia Ransom - Mistress of Ceremonies

Claudia Ransom began working at SLAC in 1992 in the Personnel Dept. She is primarily responsible for maintaining employee files and processing salary and termination actions, as well as a variety of other personnel transactions, and providing back up support to the Records Administrator. As a mother of three, ages 14, 9, and 7, she enjoys spending time with her family and being involved in church and community work. Her goal is to pursue a BS degree in Business Administration and eventually run her own business out of her home as a Medical Transcriptionist.
