Welcome to Kids Day @ SLAC 2010
Frequently Asked Questions
-
What will happen on Kids Day @ SLAC?
- After registration, kids enrolled in Workshops A and
B (9 to 11 years old) will go
to Panofsky Auditorium and kids enrolled in Workshops C
and D (11 to 16 years old) will
go to the Kavli Auditorium. In each location they will get a
safety talk and SLAC welcome.
After the talks, the kids will be divided up
into their workshop groups, based on the workshop option
chosen on the registration form. Kids 9-11 years old will
attend two hands-on workshops in the morning and two in the
afternoon, after lunch. Kids 11 years old and up will
attend one hands-on workshop in the morning and one in
the afternoon. All workshop choices will be based on a
first-come, first-serve pre-registration and are
suitable for 9 through 16 years old.
PLEASE NOTE: Due to the importance of keeping track of where each and every child
is the day of Kids Day and for obvious safety reasons, no one will be allowed to change
workshops the day of the event. Also no child will be allowed to walk in and register
the day of the event. We do our best to accommodate everyone’s first
choice of workshops and pairing of children.
- What workshop should I choose?
- In most cases, children aged 9 - 11 will participate
in Workshops A and B while those aged 12 - 16 will
participate in Workshops C and D.
- However, if the child is 11 years old and has
already participated in the Workshops offered in group A
(Biology, Hydro Rockets, Mechanics, Radiation) and B
(Magnetics, Monster Muscles, Paleontology, Vacuum), they
may enroll in Workshops C and D.
- How much does it cost?
- There is a $20 charge ($22 if an XXL shirt is
chosen) this year that includes
morning refreshments, lunch,
a t-shirt and ice cream at the ice cream social.
- How do I get a t-shirt?
- Parents, sponsors, escorts, volunteers or other SLAC staff
members who wish to purchase a t-shirt should fill out a
registration form (link forthcoming) and submit it and a check made out to
“Stanford University” to Michelle Montalvo,
MS 69. There are no refunds or exchanges.
- When and how do I register a child?
- The sponsor (SLAC staff member) must complete the registration form
(parent must sign consent) and submit a check in the
correct amount made
out to "Stanford University" for each
participant by August 4, 2010. There will be limited
number of participants and we expect to fill all
available space, so please register immediately. If you
have any questions, contact Michelle Montalvo at x2057
or
montalvo@slac.stanford.edu.
- What are my responsibilities as a sponsor?
- You must review with the child safety instructions (mitigations
described on the workshop web pages and the registration
forms)
and attend the 8:00 - 8:50 am check in and the 11:30
lunch. You are also invited to attend the 2:30 pm ice
cream social and afternoon science talks at the Panofsky
or Kavli Auditoriums. You should make sure that the kids wear
long
pants, closed-toed shoes, no jewelry and have hair pulled back!
Pick up your kids at 3:30 when Kids Day event ends.
- Who pays for lunch for
sponsors and escorts?
- All helpers must pay for their own lunch, if they
choose to participate, and purchase
in advance via the registration form.
- How do kids get to their workshops?
- Staff volunteers will escort groups of kids to their
respective workshops. It is strictly prohibited for
sponsors to take kids directly to the workshops; the
workshops are not open houses. Sponsors are encouraged
to sign up as escorts.
- What afternoon science talk does my kid(s) attend?
- The kids are split up by age, based on the workshop
they are assigned. Workshops A and B participants (ages 9 to 11 years old) and their
sponsors go to the Panofsky Auditorium. Workshops C and
D participants (ages 11 to 16 years old) and their
sponsors go to the Kavli Auditorium.
- How can I be an escort?
- Many escorts are needed on the day of the event
and sponsors are encouraged to participate. Please look
at our escorts web page for
more information and feel free to contact Michelle
Steger, x3011,
to ask any questions. To volunteer, please register
register online .
