Welcome to Kids Day @ SLAC 2007

Talk Science with Nobel Laureate Martin Perl and Dr. Sean Brennan

Kids, sponsors, escorts and workshop volunteers are invited to an ice cream social on the lawn in front of the breezeway of Panofsky Auditorium at 2:30, just after the last workshop is over. There will be an opportunity to relax and re-energize before the final, fun, science talks.

3:00 Panofsky Auditorium, 9 - 11 year olds

Matter and anti-matter annihilate one another in a high energy physics experiment. SLAC Nobel Laureate Martin Perl will talk about building and improving the monster machines that do high energy physics. Dr. Perl, with the help of kids in the audience, will demonstrate how SLAC accelerators work using pump guns and ping pong balls. It’s a CRASH COURSE!

See how SLAC became a leader in the world of particle accelerators and high energy physics.

3:00 Research Office Building 12-16 year olds

Comets blasting through our solar system orbit the Sun. Dr Sean Brennan, a materials physicist, will talk about the solar system and explain what comets are made of, where they come from and how they interact with the Earth and other planets. Dr. Brennan uses the very intense x-ray beam at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory (SSRL) to study comet material gathered in NASA’s operation STARDUST. You too can GET DUSTED!

Come learn about comets, why Pluto is no longer a planet and why each of us has the remains of a supernova inside us.
