Accelerator Development
Post Doc Positions in Accelerator Physics
SLAC Department: Linear Collider
Date Opened: 2005 October 20
The Stanford Linear Accelerator Center is seeking applicants for a postdoctoral research position in the International Linear Collider Department. The SLAC ILC Group has a broad program of design studies and R&D in support of a 0.5-1.0 TeV electron-positron linear collider. This work is under the auspices of the ILC Global Design Effort which has a goal of producing a Reference Design by the end of 2006 and a full Technical Design two years later.
The successful candidate will participate in one or two of the following areas: electron and positron sources, beam delivery systems and machine detector interface. Possible topics of interest in these areas include:
-
On the electron source, the scientist will be responsible for modeling and optimizing the design of the gun capture and bunching sections, using tools such as PARMELA.
-
On the positron source, the scientist will be responsible for yield simulations and design of subsystems such as an energy compressor, spin rotator or transfer lines.
-
For the beam delivery, the scientist will be responsible for developing specifications and tolerances for components. They will also participate in experiments at the SLAC Collimator Wakefield test facility and at the proposed ATF-II final focus test facility in Japan.
-
For the machine interface, the scientist will assist in developing the End Station A test facility at SLAC and perform experiments there on instrumentation for energy, polarization and luminosity diagnostics.
The position is a two year academic appointment, renewable for a third year, conducting original research under the guidance of the Stanford Faculty and SLAC staff. A Ph.D. in physics is required, and experience in accelerator physics or a related field is preferred. Demonstrated ability to work in a research group environment and prepare research results for publication and presentation at seminars and at scientific meetings is requested. SLAC is an equal opportunity employer.
