SLAC Garden Club Move Update

As of January 17, 2001

The "move" committee are:

  1. A new site has been chosen due East of the present garden location. To see it, walk towards Panofsky Gate and look East through the chain link fence.  The boundaries are roughly the fence along the present site (West fence), the fence along Sand Hill (North Fence), the drainage ditch along IR 12 access road (South Fence) and short East section connecting the South Fence to the North Fence at the bottom of the hill (dirt road). The alternatives are few and not desirable.
  2. The plot size is about 1 acre.
  3. The oak trees in the NW corner will not be disturbed.
  4. The plan is to have access without going through security. Presently you have to walk up through the steps at IR 12 or drive around the PEP loop road (pavement) and access on dirt roads. Not hard to find.
  5. The plan is...
  • soil samples (in progress, about 1 week) (SLAC)
  • disk field (SLAC)
  • lay out plots and water line trajectory (Garden Club)
  • allocate plots (u-pick what u-want) (Garden Club)
  • begin gardening (Garden Club)

As of April 6, 2001

  • Water and fencing are underway! We hope to have water in a couple of weeks. We have also requested SLAC to purchase 100 cubic yards of compost, which is enough for 2" of compost per plot. We will use some of the garden club funds for tilling the soil. Jeff is working on getting an estimate and we hope to have the soil tilled soon. If the estimate to have it done by an outside party is too expensive, we plan on renting a rototiller and asking for volunteers. We will try to keep everyone posted. Also, for old members and wait-listed members who did not select a plot, we assigned plots for you. There are new people currently on the wait list, so if you are no longer interested, please let us know as soon as possible.
