Are you ready for Juneteenth? Come and join our Juneteenth celebration on Wednesday, June 16, 1999. This year's theme will be "Beyond The Dream." For ticket and T-shirt information.
Juneteenth is the five day period in June when the news of the Emancipation Proclamation (signed in January 1863) finally reached slaves in Texas and a few other southern states. Juneteenth signified the end of slavery.
The most common type of Juneteenth celebration was an all-day, secular affair which began around 10 AM with a parade and ended at 1 AM the next morning with the conclusion of a dance or supper. In the afternoon there were various activities, the most popular being a baseball game, tie downs, calf roping, individual games, sweetpotato pie contest and eating.
This year we will be honoring the retirement of Al Ashley. After thirty years of dedicated service to Stanford University, and his commitment to the higher education and advancement of people of color in the fields of science and engineering. One of Al's recent accomplishments was getting the National Black Physicists Society to put their exhibit on display from 5/15/99 thru 6/18/99 at the San Jose Tech Museum of Innovation. For details on the exhibit entitled, "The African American Presence in Physics".
The great Juneteenth give away. We have some great door prizes. Autographed footballs from many NFL teams, autographed baseballs from hall-of-famers, autographed NBA basketballs, and much more. More than 60 prizes will be given away in the raffle. Don't forget to print your name and phone number on the back of your ticket.. You do not have to be present to win.
